Is it possible to play music through my ipod speakers?

i have a 16gb 1st generation ipod touch. I know that the 2nd generation has speakers and the 1st generation is not supposed to. But if that is true then why is it when you set the alarm clock on the ipod, when the alarm goes off you can hear it.
